On November 30, 2018, Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (Tsinghua SEM) held a ceremony to award the 2018 CHEN Xiaoyue Scholarships to six undergraduate students and four graduate students. Professor CHEN Xiaoyue’s widow GUO Fengmei; his daughter CHEN Meng; several members of the Standing Committee of the CHEN Xiaoyue Foundation; Professor GAO Jian, Party Secretary of Tsinghua SEM CPC Committee; Professor XIAO Xing, Director of the Department of Accounting of Tsinghua SEM; QU Weijing, Director of the Graduate Student Task Force of Tsinghua SEM; GUO Zhaohui, Director of the Student Task Force and the Student Affairs Office of Tsinghua SEM took part in the event emceed by ZHAO Dongqing, Deputy Party Secretary of Tsinghua SEM CPC Committee.

On behalf of Tsinghua SEM, GAO Jian thanked Professor CHEN Xiaoyue’s family and the foundation for what they had done for the school. He talked about Professor CHEN’s life and highly praised the professor as a convention breaker, innovator, and dedicated researcher with high moral standards. He said that Professor CHEN’s passionate devotion to work and setting-an-example-by-action approach would be known to more people, continue to inspire younger generations and keep guiding students. He hoped that the scholarship winners would follow Professor CHEN’s example and carry on with his work. He also hoped that they would keep up with their hard work and accomplish more in the future.

XIAO Xing talked about her mentor Professor CHEN. She said that Professor CHEN was a rigorous scholar and keen on seeking truths. He cared about his students very much. He not only offered them advice on academic studies and careers, but also paid a lot of attention to their moral development. XIAO hoped that the scholarship winners would not only follow Professor CHEN’s example, but also make it known to their peers.

LI Tie, a former student of Professor CHEN’s spoke on behalf of the Standing Committee of the CHEN Xiaoyue Foundation. He got his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Tsinghua SEM. He said after graduation, the more he experienced, the more helpful that Professor CHEN’s teachings became to him. Professor CHEN often asked his students to think about how to live their lives and how to make a contribution to society and the nation. LI hoped the scholarship winners would give these questions a thought.

SUN Kunpeng, who enrolled in a doctoral program of Tsinghua SEM in 2015, spoke on behalf of the scholarship winners. He said that he admired Professor CHEN very much and perfectly understood what weight the scholarship carried. Professor CHEN laid a foundation for the Department of Accounting, and his work still benefits younger generations of students. SUN said that he and his fellow scholarship winners were inspired by Professor CHEN, and would work harder to achieve more in accounting and financial studies.

Professor CHEN Xiaoyue served as Associate Dean of Tsinghua SEM and Director of the Department of Accounting from 1988 to 2000. Later, he became the Director of the Institute of Accountancy of Tsinghua University, and the President of the Beijing National Accounting Institute. Throughout his life, Professor CHEN based his academic studies on China’s reality, kept observing the world, and focused on seeking truths and striving for excellence. He challenged academic convention in modern financial and counting studies and made remarkable breakthrough achievements. In 2010, Professor CHEN passed away. The same year, by his will, the CHEN Xiaoyue Foundation donated 2,000,000 yuan to create the CHEN Xiaoyue Scholarships for Tsinghua SEM. The CHEN Xiaoyue Foundation has a management committee made up of Professor CHEN’s former students and close friends. Its sole function is running the scholarship funds. The CHEN Xiaoyue Scholarships aim to reward Tsinghua SEM’s outstanding undergraduate and graduate students majoring in finance and accounting.
