On the afternoon of April 26, 2020, Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management (Tsinghua SEM) held a virtual ceremony to award the 2019 CHEN Xiaoyue Scholarships and celebrate the 10th anniversary of the founding of the CHEN Xiaoyue Scholarships. Professor CHEN Xiaoyue’s widow GUO Fengmei; his daughter CHEN Meng; Tsinghua SEM alumnus SUN Aijun; CHEN Dong, a representative of the Standing Committee of the CHEN Xiaoyue Foundation, Chairman of Right Time Asset Management Company Limited and Vice President of the Chinese Financial Association of Hong Kong; and other committee members of the CHEN Xiaoyue Foundation participated in the ceremony. BAI Chong-En, Dean of Tsinghua SEM; Professor XIAO Xing, Director of the Department of Accounting of Tsinghua SEM; WANG Yong, Assistant Dean of Tsinghua SEM, and Director of the Entrepreneur Fellows Program and Resource Development Office of Tsinghua SEM; QU Weijing, Director of the Graduate Student Task Force of Tsinghua SEM; GUO Zhaohui, Director of the Student Task Force and Student Affairs Office of Tsinghua SEM also took part in the virtual event emceed by ZHAO Dongqing, Deputy Party Secretary of Tsinghua SEM CPC Committee.

On behalf of Tsinghua SEM, BAI Chong-En thanked Professor CHEN Xiaoyue’s family and the CHEN Xiaoyue Foundation for their years-long support for Tsinghua SEM students. Since its founding in 2010, the CHEN Xiaoyue Scholarships have benefitted nearly 100 students and helped them to develop in a comprehensive way. BAI hoped that the students at the ceremony would follow Professor CHEN’s example of being a trailblazer and wholeheartedly dedicated scholar, be brave to take responsibility, make a positive contribution to society, and concentrate on action rather than words as the Tsinghua motto suggests.

XIAO Xing talked about her experience of working together with Professor CHEN. She said that she felt honored to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the founding of the CHEN Xiaoyue Scholarships with those at the ceremony, remember Professor CHEN with his former students, and look into the future. She hoped that Professor CHEN’s independent personality and firm belief in his life goals would be known to more people and keep inspiring people, and more students would follow Professor CHEN’s example.

On behalf of Tsinghua alumni, SUN Aijun spoke at the ceremony. Sun became a Tsinghua undergraduate student in 1990 and later got his master’s and doctoral degrees from Tsinghua SEM. He talked about Professor CHEN’s short, tough, but legendary life and how the professor set an example to his students by action. He said that the scholarship winners would not only get monetary awards, but also beneficial lifelong spiritual asset. He hoped that the winners would follow Professor CHEN’s example, become useful members of society, never lose sight of their commitments, and carry on with Professor CHEN’s work.

CHEN Dong who enrolled in Tsinghua SEM MBA program in 1995 spoke on behalf of the Standing Committee of the CHEN Xiaoyue Foundation. CHEN Dong briefed his audience on the current status of the foundation. For ten years, the foundation has been promoting itself to raise funds and make investments. The use of its funds strictly follows the foundation’s rules and regulations. Every year, Tsinghua SEM will select ten outstanding undergraduate and graduate students majoring in finance and accounting. And the management committee of the foundation will approve and reward the candidates. In the next ten years, apart from raising and managing funds, the foundation will work harder to publicize itself by building up its official website. CHEN Dong hoped the scholarship winners could draw strength from Professor CHEN’s story, and encouraged those who have graduated to donate money to the foundation within their means. He also said that the foundation had a plan to select some of the scholarship winners, train them to be managers, and include them in the management committee.

A short film about CHEN Xiaoyue’s life was played at the ceremony to remember the professor.

After that, CHEN Xiaoyue scholarships for 2019 were awarded to ten students. One of the winners was HUANG Jinglei. He said that Professor CHEN was a role model for him and many other students. He was deeply touched by the professor’s hard work and dedication described in CHEN Xiaoyue – Son of Tsinghua, a book about the professor’s life. Professor CHEN was a great influence for him and many other students. HUANG said that he would follow Professor CHEN’s example and become a brave academic explorer like Professor CHEN. The rest of the scholarship winners also spoke at the ceremony.

CHEN Dapeng who was a 2011 scholarship winner spoke on behalf of the previous winners. He said that he was a student and admirer of Professor CHEN. By reading the professor’s papers and books and learning about the professor’s life story, he learned how to do research and be a better man. He talked about the professor’s love of reading, optimistic broad-minded attitude towards life, and belief that academic studies should meet practical needs. He hoped that the scholarship winners could base their studies on China’s economic reality, tell China stories well, distill theory from their experience, and carry on with Professor CHEN’s work.
