What impact will China’s new government have on the Chinese economy? Not only China, but the entire world anxiously awaits the answer.
With the global economy facing tremendous challenges, finding a balance between achieving recovery as quickly as possible and avoiding excessively loose monetary policy seems like an impossible mission. In China, the economic growth rate has decreased since the second half of 2011, due to a short-term fluctuation and a long-term problem involving the development path and structure of the economy. Although the pressure created by the economic slowdown has recently eased, this difficult situation has still not been reversed. Old methods that promote the economy by approving a large volume of projects and quick investments are unsustainable. Housing prices are soaring, even though China is just in the early stages of urbanization. The gap between the rich and poor is rapidly expanding, which reduces opportunities for peasants to transfer to urban areas and threatens the success of urbanization. The Chinese economy urgently needs to break through these difficulties, mitigate risks, and then return to a sustainable and sound road to economic growth. The new Chinese government has started to conquer these challenges by embracing the historical responsibility of national rejuvenation and the peoples’ expectations for sound and stable economic growth.
The Center for China in the World Economy (CCWE) of Tsinghua University has invited leading global academic research institutions, firms, international organizations and influential academic elites, policy makers and entrepreneurs to discuss and analyze the major issues emanating from sessions of the NPC and CPPCC, and propose strategic choices and policy suggestions.
